It took a fresh series of the Blue Planet to wake up the world into truly realising the detrimental effect of plastic on our oceans. Now, the Evening Standard in London is making a stand with its new The Last Straw campaign, encouraging the capital’s restaurants, cafes and bars to shun plastic straws in favour of biodegradable ones –
    or none at all.

One of the first to show his support for the campaign was Michelin-starred Jason Atherton, who has promised that all nine of his London restaurants, including Mayfair flagship Pollen Street Social, would stop using straws immediately.

The stats are pretty shocking. Around two billion straws are thought to be thrown away each year in London — as many as in the whole of Italy — making it the plastic straw capital of Europe. They would have a combined weight of 1,000 tonnes, equivalent to three fully laden jumbo jets.

As more companies sign up, consumers can also get involved by signing this petition:

Other organisations such as in the US are also supporting the same cause. What else is being done in your country?

Get on board and ditch the straws!
