Properties listed in the NOW Sustainability Reporting Tool are members of the NOW Force for Good.
They action the following EarthCheck sustainability certification programmes which recognise organisations that engage in rigorous, sustainable practices and are more socially responsible.
1. EarthCheck Evaluate is an entry level programme or small lodging companies. After completing a self-assessment on an operator's economic, social and environmental impact, the property will receive an Earth Rating with 1 to 5 globes. An annual independent audit should be scheduled to verify actions and obtain a certification.
Earth's | % of Best Practice Sustainability Criteria Implemented |
Descriptor |
---|---|---|
0 – 20% | Beginning the sustainability journey | |
21 – 40% | Gaining momentum on the sustainability journey | |
41 – 60% | Half way to achieving best practice sustainability | |
61 – 80% | Above average achievement in sustainability | |
81 – 100% | Best practice achievement in sustainability |
2. EarthCheck Certified is the world’s leading environmental certification and benchmarking programme for the travel and tourism industry. It uses a science-based approach to help increase efficiencies, maximise guest experience and minimise their environmental footprint.
A commitment to sustainability means taking responsibility for total impacts on communities and the environmen. The carbon footprint of a property and its emissions inside (Scope 1 and 2) and outside (Scope 3) its walls are negative impacts.
There is no global agreement yet on the measurement of Scope 3. At present, properties in the EarthCheck programme measure and benchmark emissions for Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 on waste. Scope 3 travel and commuting is also measured.
On Scope 3, the World Resources Institute - GHG Protocol - Scope 3 Standard is one of the accepted methods used by companies worldwide to account for these types of value chain emissions. Users of the standard can account for emissions from 15 categories of Scope 3 activities, both upstream and downstream of their operations
Carbon Accounting and reporting principles continue to evolve, and until there is global agreement on the measurement of Scope 3, we will show the carbon calculation of Scope 1 &2 separately from Scope 3. We will also show a TOTAL with all scopes and any extra effort, and minus any carbon offsetting to calculate a Carbon Footprint
