High QU.A.L.ITY Carbon Credits
QUANTIFICATION: 285,355 tCO2e certified and offset to date, with an annual removal of ~155,000 tCO2e. Every even-numbered year, a general inventory on 40% of the surface is conducted where random samples from 400 capture points are taken. Each odd-numbered year, a reduced inventory on 10% of the surface is conducted, where random samples from 100 capture points are taken. Inventories are verified by a third-party auditor and include field assessments where they re-measure and verify data compliance for 2% to 10% of capture points.
ADDITIONALITY: GHG emission reductions would not have occurred in the absence of the project activity. The community’s previous income from timber production allows for only 10% of the reinvestment necessary for forest protection activities and minimum wages. The financial analysis of conservation and equipment requirements revealed that forests carbon offset sales profits will allow the community to comply with all activities and forest protection salaries by 2025 and expand its sustainability program by 2027.
LONG-TERM STORAGE: Ensures long-term carbon storage through ecological restoration, constant environmental monitoring, and community-driven conservation efforts to safeguard the forest’s carbon stocks.
SUSTAINABILITY: Contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 1, 3, 6, 8, 13, 15, 17.
Social Benefits: Support local communities, promotes social equity and create new jobs. Improves health and access to water. The community is also part of the Zapotec region and promotes the protection of the Zapotec language and culture.
Economic Benefits: Generate revenue – 70% of the income from carbon offsets support conservation and social efforts, and the remaining 30% will be distributed equitably among its population.
Environmental Benefits: Conserves nature at scale by improving forest health and removing carbon emissions. Promote sustainable land use and maintain forest cover. Nature conservation – the 6,666 ha of cloud forest (a tropical or subtropical, evergreen, moist forest with low-level cloud cover) is among the most biodiversity-rich ecosystems in the world, with at least 21 species of animals, 47 species of birds, and 15 species of reptiles that directly or indirectly depending on them for survival. (Note: The territory is one of the most vulnerable habitats in Mexico, having lost more than 42% of its surface area in the last 30 years).
