Reefscapers

In 2005, Reefscapers pioneered reef restoration in the Maldives with unique coral frame techniques that now rank among the most successful reef conservation programs in the world. We provide long-term photo-monitoring and maintenance, whilst continuing to research new coral propagation techniques.

ADOPT-A-CORAL
Reefscapers recruited the first marine biologists in the Maldives (2008), implementing marine conservation projects to educate, understand, and improve the marine environment. Our programs range from guest excursions to beach erosion control, to the management of marine education centres. We also established the first sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation centre in the Maldives (2011), successfully treating and re-releasing hundreds of rescue turtles over 10 years.

Our Reach

Reefscapers provides marine consultancy for resorts and island communities, to strike a balance between development pressures and the fragile marine ecosystem. We invite local school children to visit our Marine Centres for increased appreciation of the natural environment, and educate international guests on marine conservation.

Actions & Collaborations

Based in the Maldives, Reefscapers collaborates with communities, tourism stakeholders, fellow conservation teams and local government departments. We also reach out to research partners and scientists around the world, to share our reef restoration research, and to further our own understanding.

Positive Impacts

To date, Reefscapers have propagated more than half a million coral fragments onto the reef. Our growing coral colonies provide donor fragments for new coral frames, providing resilience to climate pressures and increased marine biodiversity. Our mature coral frames contribute to annual reef spawning events, increasing reproductive success and settlement of juvenile coral polyps.
