Education is a human right, enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Today is the 5th International Day for Education, as proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. Under the theme “to invest in people, prioritize education”, the UN is calling for maintaining strong political mobilization around education and charting the way to translate commitments and global initiatives into action.

Against the backdrop of a global recession, growing inequalities and the climate crisis, education must be prioritized to accelerate progress towards all the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It is vital for countries to achieve gender equality and break the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind. Today, 244 million children and youth are out of school, and 771 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is being violated.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), dedicate the fifth edition of this International Day to all the girls and women in Afghanistan, who have been denied their right to learn, study and teach; and condemns this serious attack on human dignity and on the fundamental right to education.

Why educate a girl?  We believe that if you educate a girl, you educate the next generation as well.
