The Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (ECGTD - EU 2024/825) , also known as EmpCo was enforced and transposed into national law by EU Member States on the 27th of March 2026, with rules and penalties to be applied within 6 months by September 27, 2026. It aims to make sure consumers receive relevant and accurate information about the sustainability performance, characteristics and certifications of the products and services they purchase to ensure more sustainable purchases, and foster trust and harmonization across the European Single Market.

EmpCo’s impact is global. Regardless of size or location, EmpCo rules apply to any business (in the EU and abroad) that communicate sustainability-related claims and target the EU consumers. It makes sustainability communications a matter of legal and operational responsibility for companies by imposing clearer rules and stricter substantiation and verification requirements, with serious penalties for non-compliance.
